UNIQUE Shaped HANDLE, Hand Painted Shape #1136, Flowers w/GOLD Outlining & Gold Trim, SCALLOPED RIM & INTRICATE EMBOSSING, from Worcester, Worcestershire, England, circa 1890. DESCRIPTION: This superb quality china has colors that are bright and vivid. This is hand painted on ivory blush with a gold trim on the rim and extensive gold highlighting and outlining on the painting. The colors used are: purple, green, brown, yellow & pink w/gold on blush ivory. The pitcher has a very ornate gold painted handle. The handle has some sort of animal with its head. We have seen this referred to as the head of an animal, or bird, or dolphin and we might add serpent to that list! On these pitchers, the gold is always painted over red which tends to show through the gold on the handle. There is the extensive use of gold outlining and highlighting, especially on the flowers. The most striking thing about this pitcher is the elaborate embossing around the bottom of the neck of the pitcher and the extensive use of gold highlighting on that. CONDITION: While this pitcher is classified as used, the condition is superb. For some reason, the color painted on these pitcher’s handles is always a deep red which is then over painted in solid gold. As the gold wears, the red shows through. On this pitcher, the handle’s gold wear is minor. See photos right where the fingers would grasp the handle. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks or other wear to the gold. DIMENSIONS: The pitcher has a base diameter of 3 3/4″ and a widest diameter of 6″ with a height of 8. The capacity is 32 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: Back in 1751, Dr. John Wall, a surgeon, William Davis, an apothecary, and a group of 13 local businessmen established a porcelain factory. In Worcester in 1756 Robert Hancock was the first man to apply transferring of prints onto porcelain. By 1789 the quality of Worcester Porcelain earned the company the prestigious “Royal Warrant” as Manufacturers to their Majesties after a visit from George III; thus the word “Royal” was added to the name. After centuries in the porcelain business, surviving wars and depressions, Royal Worcester experienced a number of ownership changes after the 1980’s. The final result being the cessation of business and the sale of the trade names and intellectual property in 2009 to Portmeirion Potteries plc. The letter “O” under the mark. Identifies the year cypher as 1889. The Registration Number of #43555 was registered in 1886. So, the circa for this jug is 1889.
