Royal Cauldon Footed Set of 4 Cream Bouillon Soup Underplate Majestic 1930-1950
DESCRIPTION: This superb quality china has colors that are bright and vivid. This is hand painted over transferware on a blank of cream china with gold trim on the edges. The footed cream soups and their matching scalloped underplates have the beautiful majestic pattern #2888. Since this is hand painted, there is slight variation in the painting which just adds to the charm of the set. The colors used are: rust, cobalt blue, purple, yellow, & green on cream with gold trim & extensive gold highlighting on the painting. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, we can find no chips, nicks, rubbings, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid color and only very minor age-appropriate crazing. The lack of utensil scratches attests to the high quality of the china. There is no wear to any of the gold trim. All pieces are beautiful and classically decorated. DIMENSIONS: The underplates have a diameter of 6 3/4″ and a height of 1″. The footed soup bowls have a diameter of 5″ and stand 2 1/8″ high. Handle to handle, the 2-handled bowls are 6 3/4. HISTORY/MARKS: Job Ridgway, after establishing a firm to manufacture pottery in 1774, built a factory at Cauldon Place, Hanley, Staffordshire, England in 1802. In 1808, John and William, Job’s sons, joined their father as Ridgway and Sons. This became J & W Ridgway when Job died and later John Ridgway & Co. John Ridgway became Potter to Queen Victoria hence the claim later used in 1930 to be named Royal Cauldon! The firm used a number of names including John Ridgway Bates & Co. The initials for these various firms formed the backstamps. In 1891 a crown became part of the backstamp. In 1905 Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. Incorporated using Cauldon Ltd. With the name changing to Cauldon Potteries Ltd. In 1920 after the firm went through receivership. Godden’s Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks as mark #824.
